need to get a grip

Postby jshaw on Fri Mar 28, 2008 4:51 pm

so lately i've been trying to work on my false grip. however, i'm having a problem holding onto it due to my sweaty hands. my hands are slipping out of the false grip and back to a regular grip long before my wrists/forearms can no longer hold it. i tried wearing a pair of batting gloves, but the glove just slides down my hand and i lose the grip anyway. what would be the best way for me to fix this? should i get some tackified tape to put on the rings, get some chalk, or should i get a tube of that tite grip stuff?

Tape works... chalk works too. Another way to get a 'better' grip might be some type of rubber like a theraband (kind of like using a rubber pad for opening the tops of jars).

Find out what's cheap and what works for you.

A friend of mine is a skinny dude. He almost never sweats. Now that I am thinking about it, no wonder he has a great grip. This thread made me think about that.

Ha -- well, I'm a skinny dude and I sweat like a prize winning county hog in the peak of summer. So your friend is lucky. :)

When mine wears out I was going to check out the grip tape (it's not really tape) that is commonly used for tennis rackets.
Also commonly known under the handle Iman74

I have the old style of rings and the wrapping wore out so I used a product I bought in Home Depot called "Plasti Dip " which is a liquid rubberized coating.
It comes in two styles, one is a spray and the other can be dipped or painted on.
I painted it onto the area of my rings which I would hold onto including enough coated area to allow for the false grip.
It works great providing a non-slip surface which is also smooth.

Tyler has mentioned the overgrip tennis racket tape but the Plasti Dip stuff sounds interesting. i still have not tried it but i think it was on the Crossfit forum talking about pull-up bars that someone posted about using the plain dishwashing foam pads (not the ones with the scratchy stuff on them).

I also used the plasti dip spray. It costs about 6 bucks, and my roommate and I have been using the rings this way for about a month, with no signs of wearing off. We use the rings at the gym a lot and we can't use chalk there as it would make a mess. It has really helped with multiple muscle-ups, because I don't have to regrip everytime I get to the bottom.

how does the plasti dip handle sweat? i'm sure it works great when your hands are dry, but can you still grip well when your hands are sweating?

Chalk.

The ribbed surface of the rubber coating has worn down on my rings after about 3 months of regular use. I don't sweat too much on my hands, per se, but I don't enjoy needing to readjust my grip very often for any reason. I went to REI yesterday afternoon and got a tub of Bison chalk for rock climbing for $13. I'm under the impression that chalk is chalk and I'm not patient enough to wait for gymnastic chalk to be shipped to me from ebay :)

I bought it, brought it home and tried it for the first time today. It works wonders. I have also tried finger-less riding gloves. They were useless. I've been able to stay on the rings longer with chalk (apparently I did sweat a little bit on my hands??) and I tell you what... there's something strangely satisfying about having sore skin and blisters now :D

Chalk works wonders. You'd think it was glue.

I imagine this 1lb will last for several weeks.
