Who buys this stuff.

Since I am posting this here, you know I am not advertising this thing.

I came up on this site. http://www.fitnessanywhere.com

My question is what the hell would you pay 150 if you can get perfectly good rings for half the price. I would not even get that thing for 50 bucks.
My question became if these guys charge this much and apperently someone buys it, why don't Tyler charge the same for the rings. (I could talk because I already got the rings lol)

I'm not going to debate about the price difference. If people are willing to pay that, so be it. I think the Elite Rings are worth much more than their cost. From what I hear, the TRX is a well made and well packaged product. But it doesn't really work for the type of training I do and recommend for others. The main problem is that it has a single point of attachment. This means the straps come up at angle in towards your head. So when you are in a support position, it's impossible to keep the straps off your arms. It also means that your feet must be on the ground, otherwise you start spinning. Also, the two handles are not secured in place. They can slide if you put too much pressure on one side.
These points are pretty clearly illustrated in this muscle-up video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtWV9lrGr_M
The thing about them sliding shows up after the fourth muscle-up. That's very dangerous and I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. The guy in the video is obviously strong, but he still doesn't lock out because the straps are too narrow at the top.
There are a lot of cool exercises done on the TRX and some dubious ones. But you can do most of them, except curls (!), on the Elite Rings. Andrew Stemler wrote a pretty cool training guide showing some exercises on Elite Rings that are similar to the TRX foot strap exercises: http://stemlerfit.com/page18.htm
Just click on the link for the "easy ring training guide". He did an outstanding job writing the guide. He shows that most of the exercises can be done just by placing your feet on the rings.
Anyways, I'm not bashing the product or the company. It is better than 99% of the fitness gizmos out there. But you can't get your feet off the ground and that is most of the fun of ring training. So, in conclusion, why not buy 2 pairs of Elite Rings?

I saw these at a leisure industry convension in england. They looked rubbish for the price. I had a go and they didnt feel as good either. They wernt as versatile as the elite rings in my opinion :)

Thanks Tyler for satisfying my curiosity.

You gave a very honest and informative answer. Anytime one of my boys will bring Elite Rings vs TRX other overpriced products, I will point them to this thread.

A friend bought them. Then I showed him my elite rings. LOL. He was disappointed with his purchase.

Because people don't do enough research. People who, are just now, discovering the benefits of ring training and are just now discovering that rings are commercially available for the average person. Had they purchased rings a few years ago, like most or some of us did, they'd have only had a choice or two, instead of several choices - other manufacturers have jumped on Tyler's bandwagon....but unfortunately, in my humble opinion, he makes a superior product.

I've got the first generation rings and can report there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. I keep them permanently attached to the top of my power rack chin up bar and they're in mint condition. I use them all the time. The only issue is the tennis racket tape they came with is fraying a bit, but that's to be expected after years - and I mean years - of use. I have no complaints. I got my money's worth from them. The key to this product is the simple clamp locks. Mine have never slipped....I weigh about 180 lbs and I'm not gentle with them.

I too have had my rings for about 4 years now.......they have really held up well.
The tape is gone but I use them without it.....just chalk up more.

I'll be honest, I saw those things a month or so ago, and at first I really wanted them, but I thought the price was a little high. Then I came up with the idea, why don't I just buy a set of gymnastic rings and make one myself. That was before I found this site and realized that lots of people are already doing this. Now I'm just hoping my wife didn't get me that for christmas, so I can buy a set of rings instead. Quick question though, why can't you do curls with rings?

Why would you want to do curls? Gymnasts don't do curls for their big biceps if that's what you're thinking...

I'm not a gymnast, just looking for overall fitness. I was really just curious why you could do curls with the TRX and not with rings.

Sorry, I was being sarcastic. You can do curls with rings, but with all the superior alternatives, there is not really any reason to.

What about USA from bodyweightculture. Can you do something with it on the top of the rings?

Interesting enough another forum that I actively participate and moderate on has one or more people that actually bought this, and a good amount that made their own version of it. With their situation, goals in mind, and what not it's quite effective. While personally I have no interest in it, it can serve a purpose.
