The Gear Report
Weightlifting, Olympic Style by Tommy Kono This book is written by one of the true greats of the iron game. In the 1950's Mr. Kono was one of the strongest men in the world, winning the Olympics twice and the World Championships six times. Since then, he has maintained his involvement in the sport of weightlifting as a coach, and recently, as an author. His book includes detailed instruction on all of the Olympic lifts which should be read by all kettlebell lifters. Most of the information learned can be applied to kettlebells with favorable results. Additionally, there are some excellent and very simple training programs written up. One of the best parts of this book are the stories that are recounted by Mr. Kono. They are not only memorable and inspiring, but demonstrate how an athlete is developed through good work ethic. This book really lets you get inside the head of a great champion who overcame a lot to become who he was. Every kettlebell lifter and fitness enthusiast should read this book. The practice of full Olympic lifts has a very beneficial effect on kettlebell lifting, as I have experienced. It is well worth the time to learn these lifts. This book is probably the best way to start your development as an Olympic lifter. To order the book send a check to Tommy Kono in the amount of $34.50 (includes shipping and handling) to Hawaii Kono Company, P.O. Box 2192, Aiea, HI 96701. Zyflamend by New Chapter If you have aching swollen joints and typical over the counter pain relievers are not doing the trick, then this supplement might do the trick. It contains 8 different organic herbs designed to inhibit COX-2. They include: Holy Basil, Turmeric, Green Tea, Rosemary, Hu Zhang and three others. Check their site for further details. The pills themselves are great, they have an excellent smell to them. In the month I have used Zyflamend, I have felt some slight, but noticeable, improvement in my lower back and shoulders, despite a heavy load of tennis and weight training. I think this supplement is the real deal and is certainly worth trying out. The best price I could find was 120 capsules for $26 at iHerb. This is enough for a two month supply if used daily as a supplement. Otherwise, it can be taken at the time of soreness, as with any anti-inflammatory. Ultimate Diet Secrets by Dr. Gregory Ellis This book weighing in at a hefty 600 pages might be the last diet book you will ever have to read. For further details, check out the Ultimate Diet Secrets website and this month's interview with Greg Ellis. You can order it at the website for $59.95. Clubbells and Olympic Clubbell Swinging Video by Scott Sonnon, RMAX Recently Scott Sonnon released the Clubbell as a conditioning tool perfectly suited for grapplers and as an excellent complement to kettlebell training. There is now an instructional video to go along with it and book is forthcoming. Check out the Clubbell.tv website for further details, articles and to order. The cost is $99 for one or $179 for a pair and $39 for the video, plus S&H. Also, be sure to check out this month's interview with Scott Sonnon and look for next month's detailed article on my experience with Clubbells.
